Academic and Student Life Awards
"A Celebration of Excellence"
Each spring semester Penn State New Kensington invites students, family, friends, faculty, and staff to the Academic and Student Achievement Awards ceremony, "Celebration of Excellence," that honors the men and women who contribute so much to the life and spirit of Penn State New Kensington.
The celebration recognizes outstanding student achievement in academic and co-curricular activities. The awards ceremony and commencement are two very special traditions that celebrate student achievement at Penn State.
Students are recognized for academic excellence every spring and awarded the following academic honors:
- Membership in honorary societies
- Penn State New Kensington Scholarship
- Campus Honors certificates
- University Scholar awards
- College Academic awards
- The Academic & Career Success Center Achievement awards
- The Evan Pugh Scholar awards
- The President’s Freshman and Sparks awards
Athletic Performance Awards
Students who demonstrate excellence in varsity athletics earn All-Conference and All Academic Conference recognition from the Penn State University Athletic Conference. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors, with a grade-point averages of 3.20 and above while participating in a varsity sport, earn John Evans Memorial Scholar/Athlete awards. Evans, a student-athlete and member of the 1966-67 men's basketball team, passed away in January 1967 of his freshman year. Coach’s Recognition Awards are presented to student-athletes, assistant coaches, staff, and volunteers, for outstanding dedication and contributions to the University.
Student Aid Scholarships
Each year, more than $150,000 in campus scholarships and awards are given to New Kensington students. The scholarships are funded from the generous donations of alumni and friends and University sources. Contact the Office of Student Aid for more information at 724-334-6045.
Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award
This prestigious award is given to a Penn State New Kensington undergraduate in recognition of outstanding character, scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. The award is a medallion and certificate from faculty, staff, and students. This award is given annually to a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student.
Honorary Society Awards
The Honorary society awards listed below recognize academic excellence, and encourage leadership, and high scholastic achievement.

Alle-Kiski Society of the Penn State Alumni Association
All New Kensington campus students are encouraged to participate in events sponsored by the Alle-Kiski Society, the campus chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Each year the society honors students, faculty, staff, and alumni at a special awards ceremony at the campus' Homecoming Weekend. Performing Arts Award
Awarded to students who have made great efforts in the performing arts in their specific fields: chorus, stage band, set design, light design, and acting and drama.
Student Life Awards
These awards are to honor students who contribute so much to the life and spirit of New Kensington.The awards recognize outstanding student achievements in co-curricular activities, academics, leadership skills, and service to the larger community. They include:
- Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges
- Student Government Association (SGA)
- Lion Ambassador of the Year
- Penn State "Spirit" Award (presented by the Alle-Kiski Society of the Penn State Alumni Association)
A formal commencement is held at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters. The ceremony includes a formal procession of faculty, administrators, and degree candidates and the awarding of degrees.
