FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS RECEIVE
AN AVERAGE OF $2,300 PER AWARD

Penn State New Kensington awarded $376,000 in scholarships to incoming freshmen for the fall semester. More than 160 first-year students received an average of $2,300 per award, and sixty-six students earned multiple awards.

The scholarships -- Blue and White Scholarship; Honors Scholarship; Commonwealth Campus First-Year Award; Chancellor's Award; Provost Award; Bunton-Waller Scholarship; Renaissance Scholarship; and Wilson Award – are supported by a combination of University funds and private donations. Based on a multitude of factors, including academic achievement, financial need and diversity, the scholarships were distributed to high school students from across the commonwealth.

The Kittanning and Ford City high schools in the Armstrong School District paved the way with 21 students who earned awards, followed by Kiski Area with 17 and Burrell with 14. Milton Hershey High School in Hershey, Pennsylvania, will send Moregan Coleman to the campus as the scholarship recipient with the longest commute. Coleman earned a Provost Award and will reside in the Nittany Highland Apartments, located adjacent to the campus.

Engineering proves to be the most popular major as 43 award winners will enter the College of Engineering, Electro-Mechanical (EMET) or Biomedical (BET) Engineering Technology programs in the fall. Agricultural Sciences was the second favorite program for 11 aspiring Penn Staters. EMET is a bachelor’s degree that can be completed in its entirety at the New Kensington campus. BET is an associate degree at the campus. Agricultural Sciences is a part of Penn State’s 2 + 2 plan that allows students to spend their first two years of study at the New Kensington campus and transition to the University Park campus for their remaining two years.

The new students, as well as upperclassmen who receive scholarships, will be recognized publicly in the fall at the Scholarship Reception. The annual event gives scholarship recipients a chance to meet their benefactors face to face.

The Class of 2017 makes its imprint on campus Aug. 26, 2013, when the fall semester begins. Students who follow the traditional four-year academic schedule will fulfill their destiny on May 6, 2017, when they don a blue gown and mortar board, and accompanied by strains of Pomp and Circumstance No. 1, process to their seats in the Athletics Center, stand to be nominated as a candidate for a degree by the program chair, move their mortar board tassel from right to left as the degree is conferred by Chancellor Kevin Snider, and after being recognized, walk across the stage to accept that well-earned Penn State diploma to the applause of family and friends.
