Adult Students

Penn State New Kensington understands the challenges of pursuing higher education while managing the responsibilities that come with being an adult learner. Whether you're a transfer student continuing your education, or a new student returning to school, Penn State New Kensington offers a number of resources tailored to the needs of adult students.

An adult student is defined as someone who is:

  • 24 years of age or older; or
  • a veteran of the armed services, or an active duty member; or
  • an individual returning to school after four or more years of employment, homemaking, etc.; or
  • a person who assumes multiple adult roles such as parent, spouse/partner, employee, and student.

The criteria used when classifying students as adult learners are the same whether they are first-year or transfer students. In addition, SAT I or ACT scores will be waived for adult students who have been out of high school five or more years, or veterans who have served in the military four years with an honorable discharge. For more information on specific admissions requirements, visit our first-year or transfer student pages.
