Why Penn State New Kensington? Academic Opportunities like having visiting international scholar Shenyu Xu

The perspective on education at Penn State New Kensington is a global one.

Each year, the campus selects a Country of Focus and studies it extensively, working it into the curriculum in a variety of subjects. Sometimes the year-long celebration even culminates with an international trip to the country of focus during Spring Break.

But for those students who don’t make the trip abroad, intercultural learning opportunities happen right here on campus every day.

Many of the full-time faculty members at Penn State New Kensington have lived abroad, and many others have done research in other countries. Plus, we are excited to be hosting an international scholar from China on campus this year.

Shenyu Xu, associate professor of art at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, is teaching art classes at Penn State New Kensington. Xu paints in a traditional Chinese style with vivid watercolor on rice paper and silk.  When asked about her experience here, Xu said,

beginning quoteI taught my students new skill and material on Fine Arts and used different culture to give them new idea. My students showed amazing creativity...  My most recent works began to change into a new style. It seems to me that art is a synthesis of my personal feelings, the subject or colors that inspire me and my materials and techniques. Serenity and simplicity are my new primary goals. I began also to consider the differences between East and West as well as the differences between the traditional and contemporary art. I believe art very easily bridges the gap between the East and West culture. I also think that the artists will help people to see more connections between ourselves and the world. Hopefully, the art will give people a greater appreciation of each other."
