Why PSNK GREAT program

Why Penn State New Kensington?   The G.R.E.A.T. Program

The G.R.E.A.T. Program (Growing Regional Engineering through Academics & Training) is a new initiative at Penn State New Kensington designed to match promising engineering students with local companies in the greater Pittsburgh region.

The program is unique in that it provides qualified new engineering students with opportunities to build professional skills and experiences in their first year at Penn State with the potential to gain a four-year internship in the field of engineering.

How the GREAT program works

Students enrolling at Penn State New Kensington in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology, or starting one of Penn State's many other 4 year engineering programs at the New Kensington campus, can apply for fall admission to the GREAT Program. Qualified applicants must have a high school grade point average of at least 3.5 with an SAT score above 1500.

Applicants will have the opportunity to attend a series of professional development programs throughout the year, which will cover topics related to engineering careers, resume and interview preparation, and networking with experienced engineers. Special sessions in early fall are dedicated to preparing students for November interviews for competitive internship opportunities with our partner organizations.

Students who interview successfully will receive a part-time internship for the spring semester (10 hours/week), as well as the possibility of a full-time internship for the summer (40 hours/week). These internships may be renewable for up to 4 years, if the student chooses to complete a 4 year degree at Penn State New Kensington.
