Lauren IST student

"I didn't start out as an IST major, but I am really glad I switched. The small class sizes really allow individualized attention and the ability to excel. I am now a senior- soon to be graduating with an IST degree and an SRA minor... a semester early even with switching my major and getting a minor," said Lauren Richards.

Some students complete an associate degree in Information Sciences and Technology (IST) in order to jumpstart their careers and enter the workforce after two years.

Other students choose the associate degree as a stepping stone toward our baccalaureate program in IST. (After all, all of our associate degree credits transfer to the 4-year program, which allows associate degree graduates to enter the baccalaureate program as juniors.)

All Penn State New Kensington IST students build a solid background understanding in the core technical areas of networking, databases, programming, and systems design. Real-world work experience is gained through a required internship.

2-year IST students can choose from 3 different degree options:

  • General Business Option
  • Baccalaureate Option
  • Individualized Option, Network Security Focus
